Anthony Fitzgerald Sykes, Sr.

Anthony Fitzgerald Sykes, Sr was born in Detroit, Michigan to Dortha Mae Sykes and the late McArthur Jones on January 11, 1965.

Anthony was known for his compassion, love, humility, sense of humor, knowledge and respect for all humanity. It has been said that Anthony knew countless people and was well respected among his peers. He truly loved his family and would often express this love with a kiss and gigantic bear hug.

Anthony earned his high school diploma from Detroit Martin Luther King High School in 1984. Following this achievement, he enlisted in the Army Reserve. After returning home, Anthony enrolled in Wayne County Community College where he earned an Associate Degree.

It was t Wayne County Community College that he met and married the love of his life, Wilhelameniane Veal-Sykes and to this union three children were born, Anthony Jr., Akirastyon and Audanajha.

Although raised in a Christian home, Anthony converted to Islam. He was deeply committed to his belief and would practice accordingly. He and his brother, Rick, would often times argue for hours about their beliefs and afterward hug each other. As time went on, they both learned to taper their arguments to have respectful and intelligent dialogue. They never allowed their personal beliefs interfere with their love & respect for each other.

The last two years of Anthony’s life were filled with heath challenges, but he never complained, kept it moving, supported his family and others; and didn’t want anyone to feel sorrow for him. Anthony Fitzgerald Sykes, Sr., departed this life on Tuesday, July 30, 2019.

His life and memory will be cherished in the lives of his children Anthony, Jr., Akirastyon, Audanajha and Tayzuan Sykes; grandchildren: Terrell, Alaynah, Alyssah, Amriah and Latalia. His precious and loving mother Dortha Mae Sykes; Siblings: Kenneth (Lisa), Rick (Christine), Demetrius & Ebony Sykes; Kim Jones, Juanita Jones, Mac Jones (Natasha), Jermaine Jones (Amanda), Yvette Fluellen, Ty Jones & Eden Jones. A very, very special cousin Lamonica E. Sykes; cousins, Clayton, Troy, Gregory, Clifton and Anita Mack, Sarena (Hamzi) Danpollo; Aunts: Theresa (Alan) Gordon and Rose Major. Special friends Margaret Comer, George Davis, Sterling Dickerson & Timothy Webb and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, family and friends.
